When I was transporting gasoline, I worked just about every holiday of the year including Christmas, Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving and New Years. I remember driving New Year’s Eve in 1999 wondering if the world was going to end at midnight with the dreaded Y2K scare. Since starting my own business in 2010, I make my own schedules and never miss any important holidays anymore.
As I was driving my car past the local Pilot in my hometown on Christmas Eve, I was saddened to see all the trucks in the parking lot. Some were fueling and probably on their way home. Others were parked for the night, trying to stay warm in their cabs and probably wondering how they ended up in that situation. Sadly, some were put there by load planners, dispatchers and owners who didn’t make good logistical decisions. However, some of those trucks were driven by loners who don’t have anywhere to go, nor do they want to spend time with family. Sadly, there are a lot of these people out there in this profession. The job and lifestyle that goes with it attracts all kinds.
