“Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow.”
— Edward Sandford Martin
Get your turkey on!
Here is a list of the absolute essentials to make your thanksgiving dinner perfect:
1. Get Crafty
Crafty decorations are always in good taste and they are achievable on a tight budget! The easiest way to achieve this is by combining burlap, beeswax, fake flowers that are rich in red and orange, pumpkins, pears and other gourds. The dollar store is your best friend for easy and cheap decorations.
2. Get to Cooking!
While some may see this as the best part, others dread cooking such a large meal. Personally this is one of the most fun parts of the holiday. It is all in the preparation, so go online and find some awesome recipes and choose how you are going to make your meal this year. For my Thanksgiving, I am making a tequila infused turkey with rice stuffing and bacon garlic butter injections. *literally drooling while I type that! Make the meal your own, by throwing a twist on old classics.
3. Eat, Then Eat Some More
This one doesn’t really need much explanation, just remember eating a lot of food will make you sleepy. Driving drowsy is very dangerous, so don’t do it right after your humongous proportions of a meal.
4. Gather Your Friends and Family
This year I am continuing my annual tradition of having two Thanksgivings. I have the first with my immediate family. The second is mainly for my closest of friends (a sort of “Friendsgiving”). I postpone the one with my friends by a week or two depending on everyone’s schedule. This is an awesome way to make sure everyone in your life knows that you are thankful for them. (Plus the added benefit of having more food! Gobble, Gobble!)
5. Be Thankful for Something and Make It Known
This holiday is all about being thankful and bringing family and friends together. Send a letter to someone, buy them a gift, do something that is special to let them know you are thankful for them. A little grace goes a long way. (If my family or friends are reading this just know I think you guys are the best!).
If you think you have nothing to be thankful for, please go volunteer at your local shelter or food kitchen this Thanksgiving. Not only will you get a great personal reward by helping others, you will see that there are people less fortunate that need help. Be thankful that they get a chance to eat this Thanksgiving.
Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving everyone.
